São Tomé Island, the larger of the two islands in São Tomé & Príncipe, offers travelers a balance of culture, history, and dramatic natural scenery. Its capital, São Tomé city, is a coastal hub filled with colonial architecture, lively markets, and a welcoming atmosphere. Walking through the streets, visitors find pastel-colored buildings, tree-lined squares, and a mix of African and Portuguese influences that tell the story of the island’s past.

Beyond the city, the island is known for its lush rainforest, volcanic peaks, and waterfalls hidden in the interior. Obo National Park covers a significant part of São Tomé, protecting rare bird species and offering trails for those interested in exploring its diverse ecosystems. Pico Cão Grande, a towering volcanic plug, is one of the island’s most striking landmarks and a favorite subject for photographers.

São Tomé also has a strong agricultural tradition, with cocoa once earning it the nickname “the chocolate island.” Today, some plantations have been restored for visitors, where they can learn about cocoa cultivation and taste chocolate made on site. Coffee and tropical fruits also feature prominently in both local cuisine and export heritage.

The coastline adds another layer of appeal, with golden beaches, quiet fishing villages, and clear waters ideal for snorkeling or boat excursions.
